Coastline's Sisson Presents Kennedy With n4a Award

L to R. Sandy Markwood n4a CEO, Senator Edward Kennedy, Charles Sisson Executive Director of Coastline Elderly Services, and Amy Gotwals, n4a Policy Director

This fall, Charlie Sisson, Executive Director of Coastline Elderly Services, Inc and President of the National Association of Area Agencies on Aging traveled to Washington D.C. to present on behalf of the entire Board of Directors and the 665 Area Agencies on Aging across the country, the 2007 Leadership Award to Massachusetts Senator Edward M. Kennedy. The Award is given to an individual who has worked diligently to enhance the lives of our network and to improve the lives of elders across the country. Senator Kennedy has dedicated his entire career working to provide the quality of lives of elders and those less fortunate. He has served as an outspoken advocate regardless of the majority party. He has always been a champion for healthcare and senior Citizens. Senator Kennedy, in accepting the award, spoke of the times when congress worked to make improvements in the Older American's Act. He has championed adding Nutritional Services, Employment, Nursing Home Ombudsman and the Family Caregiver initiative to name a few. In 2000 when it appeared that the all was lost and a new bill would not be reauthorized, Senator Kennedy, as Ranking Minority Member of the Health Education, Labor and Pension Committee gathered together Senators to reach a compromise that allowed reauthorization to happen. As a result, the Family Caregiver program was created. In 2006, as the Chairman of the HELP committee the act was undated to include many of the principles of the Choice for independence initiative and passed law on time with unanimous support of the entire congress.

As a result, Senator Edward M. Kennedy is the 2007 recipient of the n4a Leadership Award.

Also attending the ceremony was Sandy Markwood n4a CEO, Amy Gotwals, n4a Policy Director and K.J. Hertz, n4a Grassroots coordinator. Sisson is a past president of Mass Home Care, and is the first Massachusetts official to serve as the head of n4a since the 1970s.
