Grinnell Congregate Housing Residents Have Fun Filled Day With Farm Fresh Foods
By Abrah J. Salk

Every year from the beginning of July until the end of October you can purchase fresh farm grown fruits and vegetables weekly at various local Farmers Markets. One of the local Farmers' Markets is held every Saturday at Clasky Common. This particular program was created through a collaborative effort between the United Way of Greater New Bedford, Southeastern Massachusetts Agricultural Partnership (SEMAP) and UMASS Extension Nutrition Education Program. Coastline Elderly Services, Inc. helps to distribute to seniors “Greenbucks” that are redeemable for fresh produce at this market.

This past summer, Coastline provided transportation on two different Saturdays for residents of Grinnell Congregate Living. Then, with the expertise, direction and assistance of Coastline's in-house Registered Dietitian and Elderly Nutrition Program project director, Philip Beard, the residents cooked up some tasty dishes with the goodies they purchased at the Farmers' Market.

Monique Garlington, the Grinnell on-site part time residence coordinator from Coastline, helped to organize the event which included making yummy vegetable soup and apple pie.

Phil Beard was very happy with the success of the event. “It was exciting to see some of the residents discover new fruits and vegetables that they had never tasted before. It proved that introducing new foods at any age can be fun”, he said.

The residents really enjoyed this event. It was a fun filled day that concluded with homemade healthy foods.
